As the Romanian brand Dacia look set to achieve their best sales figures in the firms history, other main market manufacturers are planning rival models that, not only match the design and ability, but the more important thing, price.
Fiat are looking to create a completely new brand to rival the Dacia range, whilst German giants Volkswagen are just looking to create a model to rival the Dacia in terms of price and quality. Fiat are believed to be pondering the thought of moving the 500 and the Panda into the budget range or to base the new range on the existing models.
Volkswagen on the other hand will create a brand new model similar to nothing that is already in the VW range. The importance for Volkswagen is to keep the cost the down and the firm plan on doing so by constructing the vehicle in a low cost country, as in the materials and production parts to be sourced locally. The existing technology in the current range of Volkswagen may be transferred to the new car.
Volkswagen have began developing the cheaper model as they look to sell more budget cars in the emerging markets such as Latin America and India. VW have already developed a long established budget line up in the growing economy of China. Volkswagen have admitted that the new model and production line would have to be cheaper and be cheaper to produce than the VW Up!.
The Renault owned brand Dacia has endured a vast increase in sales in the mainland Europe. The Dacia brand has thrived in places where the main mass market manufacturers have struggled as the Dacia brand has overtaken the parent branded Renault in the market share of most countries. Volkswagen homeland Germany is one of the key markets for Dacia and may be the reason Volkswagen had to stand up and take notice of the small budget brand.
