The first tests of a lawnmower that could reach speeds of over 130 miles per hour have taken place.
The vehicle was produced by
Honda for Top Gear magazine and can go from 0-60 miles per hour in around 4 seconds.
The team behind this phenomenal vehicle could attempt to have an official go at the lawnmower speed record, which currently stands at 96.5 miles per hour.
In a test run, Top Gear magazine clocked just over 100 miles per hour in France on the Circuit de Charade testing course. The lawnmower of course was also put through it's paces by the Stig himself.
Honda have said that it was working on this project to try and increase it's sporty credentials.
The main challenge from an engineering perspective is trying to retain the look of the lawnmower on which it is based, whilst maintaining the ability to be able to cut grass while achieving the handling characteristics and speed for this particular type of vehicle. It was stated by the Team manager of Team Dynamics Peter Crolla, which is Honda United Kingdom's motor racing team partner and who is overseeing the project. He went on to say that to their knowledge this has never been done before, certainly not using this engineer and mower combination, so there are no previous learnings to go on.
The current speed record for a lawn mower was set by Gold Eagle, the fuel additive firm, in September of 2010. There are however strict guidelines at when a lawnmower is not classed as a lawnmower anymore.
Whilst the top gear lawnmower does cut grass, the original cutting mechanism has been replaced to accomodate the modifications for the engine that are necessary in order for it to each the top possible speeds.
Honda has fitted has fitted two 4,000 rpm electric motors with metal brake cables attached. To get upto the 100 mile per hour mark, the cutting mechanism has to be removed however.
