The New Detroit Electric
If you haven't already noticed, the new Detroit Electric Sports Car looks a bit on the familiar side don't you think. The new Detroit Electric Sports Car has been based on the British built and iconic Lotus Elise model. The new Detroit Electric Sports Car has simply been based on the Lotus' chassis due to its agility and weight which will allow the car to remain quick and agile whilst being powered by an electric motor.
You may have heard of the Detroit Electric brand before as the brand began working on electric powered vehicles as early as 1907. The firm looked to be a pioneer in the electric motor industry as the began using lead acid electric batteries to power electric carriages. Detroit Electric have also had a number of interesting clients in the form of Thomas Edison and John Rockefeller. Another interesting customer would be in the form of Henry Ford who of course knows a fair bit about cars.
The name was bought back in 2008 by former Lotus CEO Albert Lam who conducted the necessary research to build a new electric vehicle. The interesting fact about the whole situation is that the firm and name Detroit Electric has not built an electric vehicle since 1939.
As you may have guessed, the model will be rear wheel drive with the sporting flavour of two seats and a drop top along with the mid mounted battery pack. The model will be built in the home of Detroit and will be priced in the region of £105,000 which will go on sale in August. The question is whether the model will ever make it to the UK. Electric Cars are consistently growing in popularity in the UK and I am sure that demand will be there for all to see if the model did make it to the UK. The Detroit Electric model will only have 999 models built in its name and the question is whether they would expand the market and the company to outside of the US.
New BMW Electric models along with Mercedes and Volkswagen were looking to lead the way in terms of developing a sports car that has been powered by an electric motor. However, the new Detroit Electric car will knock the mass market manufacturers out the way as they look to take a reasonable amount of market share away from the German Trio within the first 12 months.
