A winning ebay bid of £101,100 for a submerged vehicle, which was the unofficial Somerset floods symbol, was apparently a hoax. However, it is believed that a number of genuine bids had been made for the Seat model.
The Seat Toledo was auctioned by it's 21 year old owner Hubert Zajaczkowski to raise money for charity. Seat have become one of the most popular brands for the younger driver in the last number of years as the Leon and Ibiza sales figures have shown.
The car was abandoned on Christmas Eve near Muchelney and was a familiar site over the following months in the media. Zajaczkowski said that he had been in contact with the bidder though he had refused to pay and said that the bid was meant to be a joke.
He explained to the Central Somerset Gazette that the bidder was 17 years old and he had been encouraged to put the bed in by his brother, who was 12. Zajaczkowski explained that he had now been in contact with two lower bidders who put in bids of £101,000, in the hope that their offers were genuine. Zajaczkowski said that the car smelt unbelievably disgusting.
In the ebay sales description, Zajaczkowski had put, Genuine Seat Toledo from the floods in Somerset. It also said it is obviously not in working condition, but my aim is to donate the money from the car to a charity that is helping with the floods. He finished with any questions please message me and collection only.
Zajaczkowski explained that he would wait until it had all calmed down and then he would contact the other bidders to see if their offers were genuine. He said that it may be somebody having a laugh or a joke, though it would be a genuine donation.
According to the terms and conditions of ebay, a purchase or bid on ebay is thought of as a contract and you are obliged to purchase the item, unless the seller is willing for the transaction to be cancelled.
