The Porsche Macan will be released in Spring 2014 and has an expected starting price of £36,000. The SUV is looking to burst the bubble of the Range Rover Evoque, there have been images released on the internet and we have details about how this sporty off road vehicle is shaping up.
The Macan will be debuting in November at the 2013 LA Motor Show, before a 2014 release dae for spring and will be produced at a factory in Leipzig, Germany, that has been enlarged.
The Porsche Macan will be based on the same MLB modular platform that underpins the Q5 from Audi, though with a greater use of aluminium components. This means there will be a saving of 130kg in weight over the Audi model, which is mroe of a reduction than the Audi A3 and other compact Volkswagen Group models were able to achieve by using the MQB platform.
As with the Audi Q5, the Macan model will also be four wheel drive exclusively from launch. Though the engine line up has yet to be revealed, it is likely that Porsche will use a range of six cylinder petrol and diesel engines, with four cylinder versions appearing later on in the life cycle of the vehicle.
Sportier S and Hybrid versions are likely following the patern that has been set by other models in the line up, though a morelimited engine range is expected than with the more expensive and larger Cayenne.
An insider from Porsche confirmed that although this car would be sharing some chassis parts with the Audi Q5, the engines, suspension turning and the architecture on the interior of the vehicle would all be unique to the Porsche Macan. This means it will feature a cabin layout similar to that of the latest Porsche 911 and Panamera, with a row of switches on either side of the gearlever.
Styling of the vehicle will indeed reflect the sporty intentions of the Macan, with all of the usual design cues of a Porsche. The latest 911 inspires the tapered rear lights of the car, though the large bumpers, wide front grille and strong stance are definitely retained from the Cayenne model. The Macans rivals are already well established and there are new cars such as the BMW X4 just around the corner so the company are keen to make conscious efforts to avoid the car becoming a fashion item. The Macan will be a more exclusive vehicle with a lower volume of sales than the Range Rover Evoque for example.
Once the factory in Leipzig is up to speed, there will be no spare capacity for other model lines and so cars such as the Pajun Saloon, which has been much rumoured, are still several years away. Porsche have claimed that the company will be keeping an eye on the Maserati Ghibli's progess to assess the potential.
