The Korean manufacturer, Ssangyong have revealed the first images of it's new XLV B-segment SUV concept which is set for public debut at the Geneva Motor Show which is scheduled to begin on the 3rd March and last until the 16th. The new XLV (eXciting smart Lifestyle Vehicle) concept is a possible replacement for the Ssangyong Rexton model. The concept previews a close-to-production model which should arrive early in 2015. When it reaches the market, the XLV is aimed to take on the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and Ford EcoSport. The new XLV follows the XLV-1 concept which was seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2011.
Power comes from a mild hybrid system where a 1.6litre diesel engine is mated to an electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery. This set up is supposedly capable of allowing the XLV to travel on electric power for a short distance.
The small electric motor is designed to have more of an impact on mpg and CO2 emissions than pure electric driving ability. As such, a fuel economy of 70mpg is expected. Actual figures for the model have yet to be released by the company though should be announced within the year.
Size-wise, the model is 4.3m long, 1.8m wide and 1.6m tall. This makes it 290mm longer than the original concept but means that the dimensions closely match it's intended rival , the Qashqai. T
he added length means that there is enough space for seven passengers in a 2+2+2+1 seating arrangement with the additional seventh seat able to slide between the second a n third row for maximum flexibility.
The concept features the brand's 'Nature born 3 motion' design philosophy, with an aggressive front end, integrated LED strips in the lower section of the front bumper, more angular lines, a thick C-pillar and wrap around tail-lights. The styling aimed at users seeking individuality and practicality.
As the vehicle has already been spotted testing in China, it is estimated that
a production version of the model will be ready for the market by around 2015. Prices for the Ssangyong XLV have been hinted to start at around £17,500, which could potentially rival the likes of the new Mini Cooper for this year in regards to some of its specifications and, the likes of the Honda Civic Tourer in regards to the price.
