New Research shows most unreliable Engines

According to a study investigating engine reliability, Audi, Bmw and Volkswagen ranked in the bottom 10 of the most unreliable engines. German manufactured cars are apparently not as reliable as people may believe, according to the new research. Warranty Direct compiled the data for the study compiling a list of the manufacturers with the most reliable and unreliable engines. Audi, BMW and Volkwagen all finished at the bottom of the list, out of 36 manufacturers altogether.

The only firm in fact who had a worse engine failure rate than Audi, was MG Rover, though MINI didn't appear to be much better, finishing third from the bottom of the list. It's parent company BMW came seventh from the bottom and despite having a reputation for amazing reliability Volkswagen came ninth from the bottom.

Honda came top of the bunch as the study found that only one in every 344 Honda engines failed, compared to the one in every 27 engines from Audi. Despite the recent troubles Toyota have faced with the company facing recalls, the firm came second and Mercedes managed to outperform it's fellow German manufacturers, coming in respectably at third.

It was explained by the Warranty Direct Managing Director, Duncan McClure, that engine failures are amongst the worst for motorists, as these repairs usually lead to the highest costs due to the parts needed and hours of labour is usually needed to repair them. The number of failures may appear low compared to other areas like axle and suspension damage, though engine repairs almost always result in thousands of pounds worth of costs for motorists who aren't covered by a warranty.

An engine failure on a Vogue model from Range Rover recently resulted in Warranty Direct's highest claim of all time, at £13,000.
