The Morning After the Night Before!

The morning after drink-driving campaign arranged by the police, will this Christmas target the morning after drink driving offenders.

Officers have been briefed up and down the country with the main focus of stopping drivers who may still be over the limit the morning after a festive evening of alcohol consumption.

Deputy Chief Constable Suzette Davenport said: “Drivers need to be aware that regardless of the time of day they are caught, whether they are going to work or taking children to school, they will face the same penalties as someone who has chosen to drink heavily in a pub and driven at night."

The police will link up with the Department for Transports road safety campaign, Think!, during the next few winter months. Think!, has recently released a somewhat controversial and heart wrenching television advert which achieves its purpose of highlighting the possible consequences and outcomes of drink driving. The advert is aimed at young people who are more likely to be out drinking and will think less of getting into a car over the legal limit.

Whilst people may not be taking the risk of walking out of the pub and driving directly home, more are driving just a few hours later driving on the roads again. The majority of these people will have good intentions and believe that they are not breaking the law or putting anyone at risk.

In terms of statistics, motorists between the ages of 20 and 25 failed more breathalyser tests than other age category last year and those aged under 25 are more likely to have an accident that is drink related per mile driven.

Alcohol will effect people in completely different ways, so whilst you might believe you have no alcohol in your system because you are not drunk, there is still a high possibility you will have.

If you have consumed four drinks in one evening session and drive the next morning you will have been over the limit. It can take up to twelve hours for the alcohol to make its way out of your system after drinking just a single bottle of wine or four pints of lager.

It is believed that 15 million motorists in the UK do not know that when they have a drink in the evening there is still a possibility of being over the limit the morning after. Be sure to think about the consequences when having a drink, knowing you have a journey the morning after.

The consequences are the same for people coming out of the pub after excessive drinking and driving and those driving the morning after a night of alcohol consumption. So as the advert says Think! Don't drink and drive.
