According to the CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, opportunities that are presented by
electric vehicles could draw the company into the car industry in future.
Google is already rather heavily involved in the automotive industry through it's driverless car projects and of course connectivity. Though Schmidt, who was a rather surprising voyeur at the
electric land speed record attempt by Lord Drayson last week in Yorkshire, has since revealed that Google is actually spending quite heavily in R & D throughout all areas of the
car industry.
He explained that this is certainly the beginning of a new industry, it has been proven by history that new technology thrives best in new companies. He said that he believes that in around twenty years, electric cars will certainly be in the mainstream. He went on to sa that the technology that is used itself is rather simple and the use of it is advancing rather quickly. After some time, people will be looking at cars with internal combustion engines and will wonder why we drive such complicated vehicles. Digi-cams have replaced the traditional analogue cameras and the same will eventually happen with vehicles. Lastly he said that he is not sure as of yet exactly where Google fits into the large scheme of things, though if the company can get involved in the promotion of new technologies, materials, innovation and such, then he said that the company will certainly be signed up for it.
