BMW X4 Concept revealed

German Giant BMW has unleashed the brand new look of the X4 model, with a concept vehicle that will be unveiled later this month at the Shanghai Motor Show. The car is called Concept X4 and the design of the vehicle is rather largely influenced by that of the X6 model. Both cars share the same proportions and silhouette, with wheel houses, a high waistline, a bluff front, near vertical rear and shallow glasshouse.

The new car has been styled under the head of BMW's design Karim Habib and is attempting to combine both the aesthetics of a regular coupé and the visual boisterousness of an off roader. Habib says that this look will also be reflected in all of the up and coming X models from BMW. Before the car reaches BMW showrooms, there are certain aspects of the concepts design that will be altered. Among the changes are the front bumper, the internal headlamp graphics, the door handles and the mirror housings. The side window to the rear will also be receiving an additional quarter window, which is in the style of the BMW X6 model.

BMW's decision to push on with the X4 production has been inspired by the continuing demand for the larger X6. It is thought that the car will be priced around £3,000 more than the X3 corresponding models, with the X4 xDrive20d said to be being pitched around  £35,000 in the United Kingdom.

The company have not yet revaled the interior of the new X4. Though sources from BMW have hinted that it draws rather heavily on the X3 in the interest of trying to save costs. Common items for both cars include the centre console, infotainment head unit and the dashboard, though different materials will be used so that the two can be differentiated more clearly.

Like with the X6 model, the X4 will come with a four seat layout as standard, with the rear seats that are individual being seperated by a centre console. There is also a five seater layout as an option. Boot capacity for the vehicle is also yet to be confirmed by the company, though insiders have suggested that it will be about 500 litres, which is 50 litres less than the boot of the X3 model.

Sources from BMW have indicated that the engine line-up for the X4 model will mirror that of the 2nd generation X3, which is going to be facelifted itself in the early months of next year. The likely inclusions for the United Kingdom market will be a 242 brake horsepower turbocharged 2.0 litre 4 cylinder, along with a 302 brake horsepower turbocharged 3.0 litre 6cylinder petrol units and 184 brake horsepower 2.0 litre 4 cylinder and 306 brake horsepower 3.0 litre 6 cylinder diesel engines.

There is also a plug in hybrid under development, which will be using a version of the 3 series ActiveHybrid's petrol electric system and will have a 54 brake horsepower electric motor and 302 brake horsepower 3.0 litre six.
