All new Renault Twingo

The brand new Renault Twingo is being developed jointly with the Smart ForFour. The first major project combining both Renault and Daimler, is said to be progressing rather well. The replacement models for the Renault Twingo and Smart ForFour are being simultaneously developed and will share both chassis and engines when they are both put on sale next year.

The test mule has only three doors, though the finished model will actually have five, naturally boosting the practicality of the vehicle and giving the parent company of Smart, Merdeces, a rival for the Audi A1 Sportback. The Twingo will be battling it out with cheaper more affordable models such as the Volkswagen UP and the Hyundai i10

It seems as though cutting cost has been taken rather seriously in the development of these new models as not only will both share the exact same underpinnings but the Smart ForTwo model will use a slightly shortened version of the platform aswell. Unlike the previous models the new Twingo and FourFour will be featurign the same rear engine and rear wheel drive layout as the 2 seater Smart car, the engine will be put in under the floor of the boot also.

Due to the size limits on the engine bay, there will be a choice of a 3 cylinder petrol and diesel engine to be offered with both of the models, as well as an electric version that will be offered with the Smart ForFour.
