Volkswagen Mid-Size Coupe

Volkswagen's new Midsize Coupe Concept was revealed last week at the Beijing Motor Show 2014. This model could pave the way for a rival of the Mercedes CLA, that would sit under the Volkswagen CC.

Klaus Bischoff, leading designer of Volkswagen and his team designed the concept and the four door model follows the blueprint that has been set down by such vehicles as the Mercedes CLA and bigger Mercedes CLS, by combining elements of both coupe and saloon.

Volkswagen claim that the new Midsize Coupe model's proportions exhibit a very sporty nature. With dimensions of 4,597mm in length, 1,422mm in height and 1,838mm in width, it is shorter and wider than both the Jetta and Passat models.

There is a low visual centre of gravity that is achieved due to the wider central air intakes at the front of the model, the long bonnet with the pronounced arch and the short overhangs. The vehicle also features newly designed LED headlights.

At the back of the concept, the C pillars flow into the boot lid, which combined with the pronounced wheel arches and the wide hips, emphasises it's low profile. The roofline which is curved and the frameless doors mirror that of the Volkswagen CC. There are giant 20 inch alloys adding presence to the concept, which are sitting on 245/40 tyres.

On the interior of the concept, the cabin is stripped back, with an uncluttered dashboard. There are leather seats fitted and contrasting Ebony Black and Silk colours which create an impressive effect. In the roof lining and roof pillars of the concept, Alcantara trim is used heavily and Dragon Red detailing also adds to the sporty feel of the concept. The infotainment system, along with the steering wheel have been borrowed from the Volkswagen Golf.

The Space in the concept is generous, with plenty of room for five people, along with a 500 litre luggage capacity. Power comes from a 217 brake horsepower TSI four cylinder engine, with a decent performance promised, with a 0-62 mile per hour sprint of 6.5 seconds and top speeds of 152 miles per hour. The fuel economy for the model is claimed to be 44.1 miles per gallon.

There is no word as of yet on when the car will be making production, though judging by the advanced look and feel of the model, is is likely that it will be making showrooms with only minor alterations. With Volkswagen saying that the car demonstrates what customers throughout the world can look forward to, the vehicle will be sold globally.
