The brand new BMW X5 is more efficient and lighter, also it is now available as a two wheel drive model.
BMW released pictures and details online of the new X5 model, which is not only available with a four cylinder diesel engine for the very first time, it will also be offered with the option of the new two wheel drive.
The model will be on sale in the United Kingdom from November the 16th and takes a rather evolutionary approach to design, it borrows it's profile from the old car and another few design details from the remainder of BMW's range. For instance, the headlights flow into the grille as they do on the 3 Series cars, whilst the Air Curtain that is on either side of the front bumper and the Air Breather vents that are behind the front wheels have been taken from the 4 Series Coupe concept.
Any current owner of a BMW would recognise the interior of the vehicle, with the latest 10.2 inch LCD dipsplay linked up to the iDrive system, this allows drivers to draw in letters with their fingers. There is a focus on luxury materials in the vehicle, with wood, aluminium and leather accents on offer.
The practicality of this vehicle is better than it has ever been, with a new 40:20:20 split in the second row of seats. The boot has 650 litres of space with five seats in place in the car, though this can be upped to 1,870 if the second row of seats are folded. These figures are up from the old car. There is also a seven seater option available again. The split tailgate includes a new upper section as standard, whilst it can be closed and opened remotely.
The X5 range starts with the the X5 sDrive 25d four cylinder two wheel drive at £42,590, which is almost £3,000 less than the entry level vehicle. It also boasts 215 brake horsepower, 50.4 miles per gallon fuel economy and 149g of Co2 emissions. Buyers also have the option of the new 25d engine and four wheel drive.
The 3.0 litre six cylinder diesel engine featured in the 30d model is back, fuel economy is up to 45.6 miles per gallon from 38.2 miles per gallon and the power had been increased by 13 brake horsepower to 254 brake horsepower. Along with a drop in weight the 30d X5 can now accelerate from 0-62 miles per hour in 6.9 seconds, which is 7/10 faster than before.
The remainder of engines, the petrol powered 50i and the 40d and M50d have also seen improvements to emissions and fuel economy.
The X5 model has a reputation of being sharp when driving and BMW are now giving drivers better control over how their car feels from behind it's wheel. There are four suspension set ups available, Adaptive M, Adaptive Comfort, Adaptive Professional and Adaptive Dynamic.
Although the model will be on sale from November this year, only the M50d, xDrive 30d and the 50i models are available initially, whilst the other engine variants will be available from early 2014.
