The
BMW Gran Lusso coupe has been revealed, which hints at how an 8 Series Coupe from the company could look. The Gran Lusso was officially revealed near Vomo, Italy at an event celebrating the mystique of classic cars and hints at the look of future 5 Series, 6 Series and 7 Series models.
The car was created in affiliation with Pininfarina, the Italian car Design House and could form the basis of a new BMW 8 Series Coupe that would certainly sit at the top of the BMW range. The model already has several
BMW trademarks, such as the stretched out bonnet, the hofmeister kink in the rear window line, along with the double kidney grille.
It is still clear however that this is definitely a new generation of design for BMW, with a larger grille and narrow lights that are actually expected to start appearing on all of BMW's luxury models in the future, from the 5 Series onwards. The 7 Series is actually due to be replaced at the end of next year and the brand new model will actually be the first vehicle to be getting the latest luxury vehicle design language.
There are no expectations for a new 8 series until at least 2015, though when it does arrive it is likely to look extremely similar to the Gran Lusso. This includes tail lights that stretch all the way across the rear of the vehicle and the roofline that flows down into the lid of the boot through a pair of buttresses. Mounted on these is a V12 badge, which refer to the engine under the bonnet.
BMW haven't confirmed the capacity or output of the vehicle as of yet, though it could be the 536 brake horsepower 6.0 litre twin turbo engine that was used in the 760 Li.
The cabin of the Gran Lusso has many exotic materials, such as a kauri wood trim that has been sourced from New Zealand and a rooflining that is finished in Italian Virgin wool. The vehicle seats four people, though BMW claim that the legroom in the rear of the car is on par with a big luxury Sedan.
The 8 series could form part of the company plan to release 10 new models by the end of next year, it fits with the upcoming 2 and 4 series Coupes to fill the gaps within the range. It would also give the company a rival to the brand new S-Class Coupe from Mercedes.
