The new 4 Series BMW will be going on sale at the end of the year and it will have a starting price of £31,575. The new 4 Series Coupe has been unveilved officially, costing just over £3,000 more than the equivalent 3 Series model and around £500 more expensive than the 3 Series Coupe that it is replacing.
BMW say the wheelbase on the 4 Series is 50mm longer than the old two door model's, also the new vehicle is 26mm longer altogether, with the track also widened by 45mm at the front and 81mm at the back.
The roofline is also 16 mm lower than it was before, when this is combined with lower suspension, the coupe has the lowest centre of gravity of any BMW that is on sale currently. This should make the newcomer sharper to drive than the current 3 Series Saloon model. To ensure that this is true and to ensure that the 4 Series has a more responsive feel to it, the company have tuned the springs, camber angles and dampers, the rear axle has also been tweaked slightly aswell. If you opt for an M Sport model then you get stiffer suspension, an Adaptive M Sport set up that features adjustable dampers is also an option.
The design of the production car is nowhere near as dramatic as that of the 4 Series concept that was featured at the Detroit Motor Show in January, though the car does get the same lower grille, which wraps around the vehicle's foglights. The air breather that is mounted on the front wings of the car is another thing that was seen first on the concept before being featured on the new X5 and the new 3 GT.
When looking at the extra £3,000, the most obvious indication of where this money is going over the standard 3 Series saloon is the amount of kit that comes with the standard 4 Series model. The range starts off with SE models, that have leather upholstery, heated front seats, an electric bootlid and cruise control, which are all extras on the 3 Series SE model.
Front and pack parking sensors, DAB radio, Bluetooth and dual zone air conditioning are included aswell, whilst all six cylinder 4 Series models get metallic paint and electric front seats also thrown in.
Buyers of the car are able to pick from a list of hi tech options aswell, such as a self parking system, active cruise control and touch sensitive iDrive controller. There is also a lighting system that can keep the main beam on all of the time and masks out parts that would blind other drivers on the roads.
The cabin of this model is very similar to the 3 Series Saloon, though the rear has only seating for two, the front passengers get an automatic feeder for their seatbelts. The new model offers 15mm more legroom than that of the old 3 Series Coupe, whilst the boot features five litres extra space, though 35 less than with the saloon model.
There are three petrol and three diesel engines available with the new car. Starting off the diesel range is the 420d, which has the same 181 brake horsepower 2.0 litre engine as the 320d saloon model. This engine does the 0-62 mile per hour sprint in 7.5 seconds and promises a return of 60.1 miles per gallon fuel economy. The entry level petrol model is the 420i, which has the same output of 181 brake horsepower.
Further up the engine range are the 3.0 litre six sylinder 430d, which produces 254 brake hosrpower and the petrol 428i and 435i models, which produce 242 brake horsepower and 302 brake horsepower respectively. A 309 brake horsepower 435d model is the flagship, though this is only avauilable with the xDrive four wheel drive system. The 420i and 420d models can be fitted with four wheel drive also.
Prices for the BMW 4 Series
The model will be going on sale on the 5th of October this year, featuring the 428i, 435i and 420d guise, whilst other engines are due for November. All are offered with an eight speed automatic gearbox that includes launch control. Buyers are able to also choose from SE, Modern, Sport, Luxury and M Sport specifications. Some prices are yet to be revealed but the range will start from £31,575 for the 420d SE model, the 428i SE will cost £32,595 and the 435i Luxury is priced at £40,795.
Every model apart from the SE has 18 inch alloy wheels, along with sports seats, whilst the M Sport and Luxury add the BMW Business Media package. This includes sat-nav and an emergency call system that will contact the emergency services if you have been involved in an accident and tell them what type of crash it was, where you are and how many people have been involved.
