The newest version of the Ford Mondeo family hatchback will soon be released, two years after it was first announced at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show. The new model features the same wide style grille as the Ford Fiesta, alongside various other cosmetic and mechanical tweaks in an effort to boost it's popularity.
Inside each car may feature Ford SYNC as standard, an entertainment system developed with Microsoft and featuring smartphone and WI-FI connectivity. New safety technology should also make the new Ford Mondeo a safe car, with gadgets including a system that detects tiredness, cruise control that maintains a safe distance to the car in front and a warning system that alerts the driver if they switch lanes without noticing a car in their blind spot.
A choice of petrol or diesel engines are offered for the 2014 Ford Mondeo which will be revealed closer to it's launch date. The Mondeo should receive a small 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine, which should be able to power the car. A 1.5 litre EcoBoost petrol may also be offered with 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre EcoBoost, and 2.0 litre and 1.5 litre TDCI diesel engines also possible.
Those after low fuel and tax bills should look out for the two new hybrid variants. These are a petrol electric hybrid similar to the Toyota Prius and a plug in hybrid variant.
The conventional petrol electric hybrid, to be named the Ford Mondeo Hybrid, combines a petrol engine with an electric motor and uses the latter to drive the car at low speed. It should have a fuel economy of 65mpg with CO2 emissions of less than 99g/km, meaning it should be exempt from road tax.
The other hybrid to be offered is to be named the Ford Mondeo plug in hybrid and will be charged by plugging the vehicle into a mains socket. The hybrid can travel up to 20 miles on nothing but battery power, with the company claiming a fuel economy figure of 100mpg. For those wishing to avoid tax, the model has a claimed CO2 emission figure of less than 50g/km.
Each car will receive a six speed manual gearbox as standard, whilst six speed automatic gearboxes will be offered as an option. This makes the new Ford Mondeo the first Mondeo to be available with both an automatic gearbox and diesel engine combination.
A top spec version, dubbed the Mondeo Vignale, will also be released to compete with the popular BMW 3 Series, Mercedes S-Class and Audi A4. This model features big alloy wheels, new Vignale badges, chrome door handles, a new grille, a redesigned front bumper and new fog lights. Inside, the model gains quilted leather seats, luxury floor mats and soft touch leather on the dashboard and steering wheel. Ford's SYNS system and LED headlights are also included as standard.
The new Ford Mondeo is expected to arrive by the end of 2014, with prices expected to rise by a few thousand pounds over the current model to around £18,000.
