New to the showroom stock of racecars is the new 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, the fifth generation of the Camaro has been around since 2010 and despite upgrading it in 2012 to the ZL1, Chevrolet still thought they could do better. From there, the company assembled a new team including GM engineer Mark Stielow, to build the most track-capable Camaro ever. One objective for the model, according to Stielow was to, “Make it as fast as it could go.”
Power for the model is provided to the rear wheels by a naturally aspirated 7.0 litre LS7 V8 fitted with titanium valves, a variant of the discontinued C6 Corvette Z06. It provides around 505 brake horse power at 481lb/ft of torque. As it is a racecar, to provide consistent oil pressure during high-G cornering, the engine has been equipped with Camaro's first-ever dry sump lubrication, and to ensure proper cooling during track sessions, an integral liquid-to-liquid system has been added to keep synthetic oil temperatures low. The model is only offered with a Tremec TR6060 six speed manual transmission.
According to Chevrolet, the model can go from a standstill to 60mph in around 4 seconds with an estimated top speed of 170mph.
Inside, the model features standard leather covered Recaro bucket seats, with synthetic suede seating surfaces and traditional three point belts. The cabin is simplistic, focusing more on racing than technology, forgoing the climate control, infotainment screen and ventilated seat cushions in an effort to reduce weight. Outside, the Camaro features forged 19 inch wheels wearing Pirelli Trofeo R tires which have an R-compound treadwear of just 80 and the model has an overall curb weight of 3,820lbs.
The new Camaro model boasts more than 190 unique components, each carefully selected to optimize lap speeds around a racecourse, meaning they're lightweight, highly functional and durable. The new Camaro is street-legal, similar to the Porsche GT3 or Nissan GT-R Nismo.
The new 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 was unveiled at the 2013 New York Auto Show at a price tag of $75,000 in the United States (US).
