New car registrations still rising
August 7, 2013
The society of motor manufacturers and traders has increased it's forecast for new car registrations, following a 12.7% year on year rise in new car sales.

The SMMT has now predicted that car registrations for 2013 will reach 2.216 million units, which is an 8.4% increase over the 2012 figure.

There have been strong sales across fleet, business and of course private which have helped to create over 162,000 new car purchases last month, which makes July the 17th successive monthly rise, with regards to new car registrations.

Mike Baunton, who is the interim Chief Executive of SMMT has said that recently a range of economic indicators that have pointed to the improvement of conditions and have raised the sales forecast, this emphasises how positively the remainder of the year is being viewed.

The registration of vehicles that are alternatively fuelled grew by 17% last month, with registrations for plug in vehicles continuing to fuel increases. Since the start of the year electric and plug in hybrid registrations have increased by 70.7%, with their total sales reacing 1,885. The SMMT have said that the growth has been due to the increase in the availability of products throughout the United Kingdom and the tax breaks that have been offered to motorists who reduce their vehicle's CO2 emissions.

Petrol and diesel powered vehicles continue to have a more or less equal share of the car market, with 47.8% and 50.7% respectively.

Ford continue to dominate in 2013 with the Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta proving to be the most popular cars last month, with sales of £7,229 for the Focus and £9,089 for the Fiesta.
