A city in New Hampshire has filed a lawsuit against Robin Hood and his Merry Men, literally, for topping up parking meters that have expired or nearly expired for drivers, to help stop them being issued a parking ticket. In Keene, New Hampshire, a group of six, have been tracking parking enforcement officers in the area and then getting to local parking metres that have expired or are expiring and are putting some extra money into the
parking meters so that the driver parked there gets a little bit of extra time,
Drivers who are spared a parking ticket by these alternative vigilantes are usually left a note that says something along the lines of, your meter expired, though we saved you from the tarrifs of the King, Robin Hood and his Merry Men. The note than also lists an address where people can send a donation to and has the sentiment, Pay it forward written onto it.
The City, which has a population of 23,000 is suing Robin Hood and his Merry men because the group have apparently been harassing parking officers and they have even considered quitting. The City has explained that they don't want to have to find and then train new parking officers.
This lawsuit has specifically alleged that Robin Hood and his Merry Men have been following, taunting and even video taping officers. One officer said that the group used profanity towards him and also mocked him on his military background, he has asked for a restraining order of 50 feet against the group on behalf of the other parking officers.
One of the members of the group, James Cleaveland has said that he doesn't think that videotaping and talking to the parking officers should be considered as harassment.
The Robin Hooders believe that the City is really annoyed because the actions of the group are costing them some of their revenue, as the band of Merry Men have claimed to have stopped thousands of
parking tickets from being issued.
