With two motor shows upon us this month, the 2014 New York Motor Show and the 2014 Beijing Motor Show (Auto China), manufacturers are working twice as hard to produce new concept and models for enthusiasts alike. The Beijing Motor Show is still over two weeks away and yet manufacturers are already teasing their newest concepts. Here's a brief look at a few of the teased vehicles.
The new Volvo S60L Hybrid will debut at the Beijing show and will launch in the China car market later this year. The vehicle is a China-only China-made stretched variant of the Volvo 260. The S60L competes with other stretched sedans such as the Audi A4L and the BMW 3Li, none of which offer a hybrid variant.
The S60L Hybrid will be powered by a 200 brake horse power 2.0 litre turbo petrol unit mated to a 67 rake horse power electric motor. The combination of petrol-electric is unique for China, as Volvo only offers a diesel-electric hybrid to the rest of the world.
BMW will preview it's upcoming 9-series sedan with a concept car at the show. The vehicle will feature an extra long wheelbase and is designed to rival the Mercedes-Benz S600 Maybach, which itself is production ready and is set to debut in a couple of months. The car will be underpinned by the G11 platform which will be shared by a number of high end BMWs including subsidiaries like Rolls-Royce.
The 9 series will be positioned alongside the Rolls-Royce Ghost in BMW’s global line up, and is expected to feature packaging and interior appointments similar to that of the S600 while building upon the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso concept unveiled at the 2013 Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance in Italy. Both the new 7-Series and 9-Series are expected for a launch in 2016.
Japanese luxury car brand Lexus have confirmed their compact NX SUV will make it's public debut at Beijing this year. The vehicle will be a descendent of the LF-NX concept which was unveiled in Frankfurt last year.
The LF-NX adopts the Japanese carmaker’s latest L-Finesse design philosophy. The concept car has a prominent spindle grille, sharp and narrow headlamps, LED daytime running strips and flared wheel arches. The previously leaked images of the Lexus NX, however, feature a toned-down exterior design from the radically styled Lexus LF-NX concept. Upfront, the new SUV gets a tamer grille while the LED lights are replaced by the traditional projector lamps. The corner styling of the production SUV is far less aggressive than the concept car.
According to reports NX will introduce turbocharging technology to Lexus’ line-up. The range will include the NX200t, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. The NX300h is expected to be a petrol-electric hybrid.
This new concept SUV will compete with the likes of the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Range Rover Evoque when it goes on sale after it's Beijing Motor Show debut.
