BMW M5 30th Anniversary

As a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the M5 super saloon, BMW have revealed a new '30 Jahre' limited edition model. The name '30 Jahre M5' translates to '30 years of the M5'.

What powers the new BMW M5 anniversary edition?

The new limited edition model is powered by the same 4.4 litre twin turbo V8 unit as any other M5 and uses the same seven speed dual clutch automatic gearbox to transfer power to the rear wheels. However, compared to the standard M5, the new limited edition model gains a power boost of 40 brake horse power and comes with all the chassis upgrades of a Competition Pack M5. According to reports, the extra power comes from software revisions to the engine management system and an increase in turbo boost pressure.

This power boost means the model produces 592 brake horse power overall and is capable of accelerating from a standstill to 62mph in 3.9 seconds. At this speed, the special edition model is four tenths quicker than a standard M5 and three tenths quicker than a Competition Pack-equipped model.

Top speed is limited to 155mph, though there is an optional M Driver Package which removes the speed limiter and enables you to hit 190mph, making the 30 Jahre M5 the fastest series production BMW ever made.

Has the BMW M5 received any styling or technical tweaks?

The Competition Pack chassis features suspension lowered by 10mm, stiffer anti roll bars, firmer springs and dampers, and a few tweaked settings for the steering and gearbox. These include a re-programmed stability control programme and faster reactions from the electromechanical steering system.

Style-wise, there is little to mark the limited edition out from the lesser M5s, though the 30 Jahre model will come in Frozen Dark Silver paint with dark chrome trim accents and there will be some new subtle badges hidden in the wing mounted vents. There's more 30 Jahre badging on the kick-plates and dashboard. The model will also gain unique alloy wheels.

The company plan to only create 300 units of the M5 30 Jahre. There has been no confirmation of whether the 30th anniversary M5 will be coming to the UK market but if it does, prices are expected to be in excess of the £81,150 price that BMW asks for the M5 Competition model.
