World Safety First for Volvo
Volvo have announced the release of their new cyclist detection system which could potentially be a life saving piece of technology. Volvo have labelled the piece of kit as being both innovative and life saving as it links a pedestrian and cyclist detection system with a automatic braking system.
Volvo have a similar system on their current range and have announced that this new technology will be fitted on all Volvo models in the future. How Does it Work?
The new life saving technology will constantly monitor the cars surroundings, which is similar to the technology we have seen used on the driver less car. Whilst monitoring the surroundings of the vehicle it will also be ready and waiting in anticipation of a cyclist swerving in front of the car amongst other accident situations.
Volvo targeted the piece of technology after assessing the current European accident data which suggests that more than half of all cyclist accidents are collisions with a motor vehicle. The move by Volvo will make the manufacturer more popular with both cyclists and cyclist friendly motorists.
The technology will combine the eye of a camera and a radar to sense the vehicle ahead and if a cyclist or a motorcycle were to swerve in front of the car then a instant warning is issued to the driver and then the automatic breaking system will kick in and take place.
The technology will be fitted and available on all Volvo models by mid May at the earliest. Volvo have announced plans of achieving no deaths at all in any of the Volvo models by 2020. Technology within the motor industry is constantly developing and changing and as the autonomous car looks to take shape and develop technology in itself, manufacturers across the globe will look to use and adopt the technology in a way of improving the appeal of an autonomous car.
