The
Ford Ecoboost 1.0 litre engine has been awarded the international Engine of the Year for the second year. The small yet powerful engine has retained it's crown at the International Engine of the Year Award 2013. The three cylinder engine, currently fitted to the
Ford Fiesta, Focus, B-Max, C-Max and Grand C-Max was chosen by 87 automotive journalists on a panel, from 35 Worldwide countries. The engine has also achieved the highest score overall in the entire 15 year history of these awards.
The former winners of this prestigious award, which grades the driveability, economy, refinement and overall performance of the engine, include Mazda's 1.3 litre Rotary engine from the RX-8 model and the 0.9 litre TwinAir Unit from Fiat. Ford is one of only three manufacturers who have won the trophy two years running.
The engine is designed and engineered at the company's R&D centres in Dagenham and Dunton, thought hey are assembled in Cologne. The engine has been a complete runaway success since it was fitted to the Ford Focus in 2012. In response to a rise in demand, the production will be doubled, beginning in August, to over 1,000 engines per day.
The engine produces up to 123 brake horsepower and returns as much as 65.7 miles per gallon, in the Fiesta model, the engine is crucial to the expansion plans of the company. Ford is aiming to sell 480,000 of the EcoBoost engines by 2015, 300,000 of these will be the 1.0 litre Ecoboost engine.
For
Ford to achieve these numbers, the engine will eventually be fitted to the new Ford Mondeo and the EcoSport crossover, along with commercial vehicles like the transit Connect and Courier.
