An air bag problem results in recalls over the BMW 3 series

German brand BMW have recently confirmed that they are to recall a number of older 3 series models after issues have risen over a faulty air bag malfunction in the vehicle. The older line up is most affected by this particular issues and the models from years 2000 to 2006 will be affected. It has been confirmed by the mass manufacturer that the total number of 3 series models set to be recalled currently stands at around 1.6 million. The air bags themselves were not originally fitted by BMW themselves and came courtesy of a third party company named Takata.

This is just one of the latest in vehicle recalls for air bag issues as other top manufacturers such as Honda and Nissan as of late have also been affected by faulty air bags. This however will not be the first time that the third party company Takata have been investigated for faulty air bags. As a number were recalled for a similar sort of issue last month in the two hot countries Puerto Rica and Florida.

What exactly is the problem with the air bags ?

So it has been officially confirmed by the German manufacturer that the reason these older 3 series models are being called in because of a fault that can cause the air bag to rupture which will therefore lead to an abnormal deployment of the air bag which could potentially prove to be fatal. Fortunately no incidents have been reported regarding any issues on the older 3 series models as of yet, the company are just bringing in the recalls as a precautionary measure.

Back in May of last year a number of vehicles from BMW were recalled due to similar problems with the air bags but the manufacturer has confirmed that this new recall is not linked with this previous one from May 2013.

Why the amount of air bag recalls ?

As we stated other companies such as Nissan and Honda have had recent recalls due to air bag issues as have . Only one incident between the three brands was reported in which resulted in a burning seat cover in a Toyota vehicle. There is now word however if the BMW air bag issue is in any way related but we expect to hear more over the course of the next coming weeks.
