The Renault Twizy F1
You may have seen a number of images of the new Renault Twizy F1 and are wondering how the model is possibly linked to the Formula 1 cars of today. It isn't exactly the most traditional looking Formula 1 car and will not be driven by the likes of Kimi Raikkonen. However, there is a feature of the model that will be remembered for its feature within the Formula 1 sport.
The Renault Twizy was supposed to be the next big thing for the electric car industry and yet Renault have looked to make a number of changes to the car in the event of it being released once again. Renault have given the Twizy model a more sports like flavour and technology in the attempt to reignite interest and give the model more chance of improving market share.
Renault have transferred a Renault Megane KERS technology system onto the Renault Twizy model. If you are a keen follower of the Formula 1 sport then you may have already recognised the use of KERS technology was a feature of the Formula 1 car. This time round the KERS technology will feature on the single seater racing style Renault Twizzy model.
What is Kers?
Kers is an acronym which stands for Kinetic Energy Recovery System. The system will look to use regenerative energy that is captured under braking and then stored in batteries rather than being given off as heat and therefore losing the energy. Through the form of a control unit stored within the system, the KERS can then be released and used in the powering of the engine and act in a similar way as a turbo would.
It is an exciting project for the Renault team which may well demonstrate the transformation of Formula 1 technology from the track to the use of the road. Porsche have come out and somewhat controversially criticised the sport for not allowing manufacturers transfer technology and research to development of new road models. However, manufacturers such as Mercedes and Renault for example have praised the sport for the road developments they have made.
