Lightning design the fastest motorbike in the world

The fastest motorbike across the whole planet, that you are able to ride on the road, is now a battery powered machine from Lightning.

The Lighting Ls-218 was manufactured in the United States and has an alleged top speed of 218 miles per hour. The model is based on the racing motorbike from the company.

The Ls-218 is powered by an electric motor that produces 200 brake horsepower and it offers maximum power from more or less tickover, all the way to the 10,500rpm limit of the motor. It only takes around 30 minutes to charge the bike fully and after it has been charged in full the Ls-218 allegedly has a range of 100 miles.

The goals and performance rates for the ls 218

The company is looking now to sell versions of the Lightning Ls-218 which are road going, with a £23,000 starting price for the model. For that amount, buyers get a motorbike that has been hand built to their preferred specification, along with race specification wheels and brakes.

Lightning has also tested it's technology in the world of circuit racing, along with at the Pikes Peak Hillclimb. Richard Hatfield who is the founder of the company has said in a recent report that the Lightning Ls-218 is able to compete with all of the best alternatives that are powered by petrol today. He explained that Lightning achieved the goal that was set for it in 2009 to compete against the best racing motorbikes and to win. In June of last year, at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, Lightning won first overall after competing with 93 other motorbike teams, by more than 20 seconds. Hatfield finished by saying that now people are able to ride this motorbike on the road. For many years the Suzuki Hayabusa has been the fastest petrol motorbike on the world and will still hold this record as far as petrol engines go. Can this all new model from Lightning prove to be a contender for the likes of Yamaha and Honda aswell though ?

Electric the future for bikes aswell as cars ?

It seems that electric cars are not the only electric vehicle that are becoming increasingly more popular, with electric motorbikes now available for road, it will be interesting to see how many people take their passion for motorbikes to a different level. If you're a motorbike person and have been recently thinking about how you and your bike can help the carbon footprint, then maybe this motorbike is for you.
