The state of roads for our cars here in the UK

The Government recently promised £140,000,000 to help councils repair potholes on roads in the United Kingdom. This includes roads that suffered damage due to the major flooding around Christmas and the start of February.

The Local authorities that were affected the worst during the recent floods in Britain will be receiving £36.5,000,000 to help with roads that were ruined by the floods, whilst the remaining funds will be shared out by the DfT (Department for Transport). The DfT has said that it hopes that most of these funds can be distributed throughout the next few days, so that councils have the opportunity to start repairing roads as soon as possible.

What damage has been done to our roads here in the UK ?

The United Kingdom's roads always have a tough time at winter due to the combination of lots of traffic from cars of all brands from the likes of BMW machines to Audi general cars all round and motorbikes amongst other forms of transport.  the cold weather and heavy rainfall that all help to break up the surfaces of many roads. This winter is one of the wettest ever on record and structural damage and erosion has been especially harsh because of it.

The Department for Transport said in a statement that local councils have a responsibility to maintain the roads of Britain properly, though the exceptional weather has of course caused significantly more damage than usual, which has increased the amount of damage to Britain's roads. As the flooding has receded, councils have had the opportunity to assess the impact that the severe weather has had on the roads, it is clear that certain areas have been more affected than others.

What do People have to say about the conditions of our roads ?

Though whilst the reaction from the government to the state of the roads in the United Kingdom has been welcomed, there are some experts who have voiced their concerns that the general standards of the roads in the United Kingdom should be safeguarded.

Even though the government has explained that over £1,000,000,000 has been spent on maintenance of local roads for the 2013-2014 financial year, the United Kingdom's road network has dropped to 28th in the world for it's quality of roads, this is according to the World Economic Forum. This puts the United Kingdom behind Cyprus and Chile and is on par with Namibia.
