Toyota Diesel Engine

Toyota's new diesel engine a BMW.

Toyota's new Verso 1.6 D-4D that will be launching early next year will be the first car form the brand to use an engine made by BMW.

The Toyota engine specs.

Adding the 111bhp unit to the Verso range will widen the engine choice to four;

  • The New diesel 1.6litre D-4D – 111bhp with 83kW at 4000rpm. Delivering 270Nm of torque at 2,250rpm. Diesel.

  • The diesel 2.0litre D-4D - 122bhp with 91kW at 3,600rpm. Delivering 310Nm of torque at 1,600rpm.

  • The petrol 1.6 Valvematic – 130bhp with 97kW at 6,400rpm.

  • The petrol 1.8 Valvematic – 145bhp with 108kW.

The new engine is also the cleanest in the range, with CO2 emissions of 119g/km.

Toyota’s design team at the brand’s European technical centre in Belgium led the development of the Verso to ensure it could be effectively combined with the BMW engine.

Volkswagen along with Audi have both decided to join the BMW brand in the electric car market, as the trio of manufactureres look set to claim back a considerable amount of market share taken by Nissan and Toyota in the electric car market.

To do this, new components were required included the engine mounts, a dual-mass flywheel, a gearbox housing and gearing and a stop/start system to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.

Production of the Verso 1.6 D-4D will begin in January 2014 at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey’s Adapazari plant, where all Versos are built.

The Toyota and BMW collaboration.

The supply agreement, signed two years ago, is the first stage of a tie-up between the two brands that will see them work together on environmentally efficient technologies for future vehicles.

Future co-operation between Toyota and BMW is set to include the development of a fuel cell system, a feasibility study for the joint development of a sports car platform, development of lightweight vehicle body technologies and research into lithium-air batteries.

Comments from Toyota.

Toyota Motor Europe President and CEO, Didier Leroy commented, “At Toyota, we believe that tackling environmental challenges facing our industry will require more than one approach. Hybrid is at the core of our strategy towards sustainable mobility, but we also see a role for clean diesel in Europe. Working together with an industry leader like the BMW Group allows us to benefit from economies of scale to reduce development costs as well as improve our time-to-market. ”

The new engine collaboration from Toyota and BMW is the first major step the two groups have taken since their agreement and is likely to be the first of many considering the speed of progress in the electric vehicle (EV) market.
